The image I used in this athame is of a magical tree whose roots hold a powerful secret. The blade is etched with symbols special to the person who asked me to make it. And the fingerguard is curved in a sliver crescent moon shape. As an artist in metals this is a special item for me to have undertaken. The piece becomes magical in the doing, the planning and the finishing of the image. When I completed it, I wasn't sure I wanted to let go of it... But as with any creation the artist must remember that he or she is just the tool whereby the image is made manifest. It must then pass on to the one it is meant for. I feel honored every time someone requests a special item from me. It is then that I can sit and let the image come to me and allow creativity to create through me. And I too can sit back and wonder in the creation of the piece. It is good to be an artist. I thank my friend for having the confidence in my abilities to bring forth the tool she needed. |

About this Athame: Completely hand-forged, shaped and polished high tensile chromium steel blade (13" overall length, 9" exposed blade length) with solid hand-forged brass finger guard, and handle of .999 fine silver (piece soldered and forged). With hematite and onyx set either side of grip. 14 opals are set among the branches and leaves under the finger guard and a diopside crystal cluster is set in the pommel base, with gold filled wire attaching three silver leaves to complete the design. In the upper part of the pommel is a nut that tightens on to the blade tang. |
